LA Tech Athletics Celebrate at Second Annual Techspys
May 4, 2016
RUSTON -- The blue carpet was rolled out once again as the Louisiana Tech Athletics Department hosted the second annual Techspys inside Howard Auditorium on Tuesday night.
For the one night, all of the LA Tech players turned in their uniforms and instead dressed up for the ESPY-like event to celebrate their success on the field/court, in the classroom and in the community.
Emcee Teddy Allen got the occasion started, followed by a highlight video of the Bulldog and Lady Techster teams from this past year.
Then the first of 12 awards was presented starting with Female Top Performance of the Year which went to volleyball's Marta Monne for her 23-kill performance versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Taking home Male Top Performance of the Year was men's basketball's Alex Hamilton for his triple-double in what was his final game inside the Thomas Assembly Center.
Softball's Karlee Jensen and football's Jaylon Ferguson were the recipients of Female and Male Freshman of the Year. The results of the fan vote for Female and Male Play of the Year were next, going to soccer's Monica Gebler on a goal scored after a perfect five-pass combination versus UTSA and men's basketball's Derric Jean for his half court buzzer-beater at Marshall.
As the celebration moved on, receiving the Techspy for Male Student-Athlete of the Year was football's Kenneth Dixon who concluded one of the most prolific careers in NCAA history, earning first team All-Conference USA honors and ranking as the program's all-time leader in touchdowns scored, points scored and rushing yards. He was also a recent fourth-round selection in the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
Female Student-Athlete of the Year went to track and field's Mia Adams who claimed second team All-Conference USA honors with a silver medal in the long jump at the 2016 C-USA Indoor Championships.
Rounding out the awards were soccer's Kathryn Sloan and football's Jeff Driskel receiving the President Award, and the 2015 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl champion Bulldog football team taking home Team of the Year for a second straight time.
Also receiving awards were track and field who won the SAAC Award and women's soccer who won Highest Team GPA Award. The squad featured 11 of the 26 student-athletes who were recognized for earning the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Providing entertainment for the event were two singing performances -- softball's Tori Charters (along with Ashton Guinn) returned to the stage for a second time and the duo sang a mix of BoB's "Airplanes" and The Script's "Hall of Fame" and football's David Mahaffey delivered an emotional act by singing "Amazing Grace."
There was also an amusing bloopers video showing funny moments when the camera does not stop rolling on the student-athletes during interviews and promotional pieces.
The presenters for the event included Elizabeth Turnley (Director of Marketing for Northern Louisiana Medical Center), David Darland (Senior Vice President for Business Development at Origin Bank), Keely Davis (SAAC President), Travis Napper (President and CEO of the Ruston Convention and Visitors Bureau), Rachel Vizza (Miss Louisiana Tech), Amber Burdge (Assistant Athletics Director for Academics), Dr. Donna Thomas (Faculty Athletics Representative), Gerald Jordan (Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine), Dr. Les Guice (University President) and Tommy McClelland (Athletics Director).
