RUSTON - Louisiana Tech Athletic Communications walked away with a total of eight awards at the 2014 Louisiana Sports Writers Association contest in the Sports Information Division.
Tech won eight of the 20 total awards in the seven sports information categories, the most by any state school. LSU (6), Northwestern State (3) and McNeese State (3) also recorded strong showings in the yearly contest.
Tech picked up two firsts, four seconds and two thirds in the contest and now has won a total of 52 awards in the last 13 years, second most in the state behind only LSU (102).
Thomas picked up a first place in the Best Fact Sheet category with her Bulldog baseball game notes while McGuire picked up a second place with his Bulldog basketball game notes.
"All fact sheets provide more info than a writer probably needs, but many fact sheets aren't media friendly because of lack of organization," wrote the judges. "The winning fact sheet in this category has easy-to-find info. You don't have to dig forever to find team stats and the roster is on the back of the last page of the release. The simplest things can be the best."
Tech went 2-3 in the Best Release category as Allen won second place with his feature story on George Stone's induction into the LA Tech Athletics Hall of Fame while McGuire took home third place with his feature story on Bulldog football player Shakeil Lucas.
Walsh won third place in the Division I Media Guide category with his Bulldog football media guide, finishing behind only LSU's football and men's basketball guides.
Butler picked up first place in the Division III Media Guide category with his Lady Techster basketball guide while Thomas placed third with her Bulldog baseball media guide.
"Great review of a proud program," wrote the judges about the winning media guide. "Great cutouts and photo work on player pages."
After winning the College Radio Play-by-Play category last year, Nitz finished second this year with his call of the Bulldogs win over Middle Tennessee.
