Athletic Communications Leads State with Eight LSWA Awards

RUSTON, La. - Members of the Louisiana Tech Athletic Communications Department garnered eight awards in the 2016 Louisiana Sports Writers Association sports information contest, the most by any school in the state for the third consecutive year.
Malcolm Butler, Kane McGuire, Dave Nitz and Patrick Walsh combined to record four first place finishes, three second place finishes and one third place finish. Since 2002, Louisiana Tech Athletic Communications as won 68 awards in the contest, the second most in the state behind only LSU.
For the third time in four years, Nitz – the Hall of Fame broadcaster for Louisiana Tech – took home first place in the college radio play-by-play contest with his call of the UAB men’s basketball game last season from Feb. 13, 2016. In that game the Bulldogs, trailing by double digits in the second half, came back to record an 85-76 win over UAB with Erik McCree leading the team with 33 points. Butler finished second in the category with his call of LA Tech’s dominating 72-37 win over Southern Miss in women’s basketball on Jan. 24, 2016.
Butler also won first place with his 2015-16 women’s basketball media guide in the Division III Media Guide category.
Walsh claimed Louisiana Tech’s other two first place finishes as his football game notes won in the Best Fact Sheet category while his feature story “Family Man” of current academic advisor Thomas Graham also won Best in the State honors. Additionally Walsh took home second place honors in the Division I Media Guide category with this 2015 Football Media Guide.
McGuire finished third behind Walsh in the Division I Media Guide category with his 2015-16 Men’s Basketball Media Guide and finished second in the state in the Division IV Media Guide category with his 2015 Women’s Soccer Media Guide.
