July 16, 2012

RUSTON - Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde announced Monday that he has hired Doug Sutherland as the assistant athletics director for ticket operations.

"We are pleased to have Doug join our administrative staff," Van De Velde said. "He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in ticket operations and the business side of intercollegiate athletics, and he has served in successful athletic departments at the University of Florida and Ohio State University. He will be a great asset and will continue to make the improvements necessary to grow the program."

Van De Velde also announced that the Tech Ticket Office will be implementing new hours starting this week as it will open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. in order to better accommodate fans.

Sutherland brings a wealth of experience to the position after spending the past nine years in a variety of ticketing roles at some of the top AQ programs in the country, including Florida, Ohio State, Miami and USF.

In addition to the normal day-to-day responsibilities of the ticket office, Sutherland will coordinate all marketing and sales efforts with The Aspire Group, will coordinate game day staffing for ushers, ticket takers and sales staff, will oversee the Ticketmaster system, and will coordinate donor tickets and seating with the Foundation and LTAC. He will also work closely with the business office setting revenue goals and balancing accounts as well as overseeing the annual audit.

Sutherland comes to Ruston after spending more than two years at the University of Florida where he served as the student ticket supervisor before he was promoted to the assistant director of ticket operations. During his time in Gainesville, he oversaw the distribution and administration of all UF student tickets, assisted in the daily management of ticket office operation including overseeing staff and creation of seasons/events in the Ticketmaster/Archtics system. He also supervised ticket operations for volleyball and lacrosse including NCAA post-season events and was a member of the Athletic Association's Annual Plan Committee.

The Laurel, Delaware native also spent time as the director of athletic ticket operations at the University of Miami (2009) and as the assistant director of athletic ticket operations at USF (2007-09) during a time that saw football ticket revenues exceed its goal by $2 million dollars.

At the Ohio State University he started as a sport programs associate in the ticket office in August of 2004 before being promoted to the assistant director of ticket operations less than a year later. Previous to Ohio State he had the opportunity to intern for the New Orleans Hornets and a year in the UCF ticket office (2003-2004) as an intern where he started his career in college athletics.

He earned his bachelor's degree in forest resources and conservation from Florida in 2001 and then earned a pair of master's degrees in sports business management as well as business administration from UCF in 2004.

Van De Velde also announced that Jeff Cummings will join Sutherland in the Louisiana Tech Ticket Office, serving as the ticket operations associate.

Cummings comes to Ruston with experience working in both the LSU and Tulane athletic departments as well as for the New Orleans Zephyrs minor league baseball team.

After graduating from LSU in 2007 with a bachelor's in general studies, Cummings spent seven months as a marketing and promotions intern for the Zephyrs where he worked extensively with the franchise's kids club.

Cummings then joined the Tulane family in September of 2008 as a marketing and promotions assistant in the athletic department where he worked in a number of areas including tickets, promotions and marketing.

Sutherland and Cummings hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System.
