Athletic Communications Wins State Awards

Tech's eight awards most among state schools

Malcolm Butler begins his 18th year in the Louisiana Tech Athletics Department, his 10th as the associate athletic director in charge of communications.

Butler is the fourth longest tenured athletic department employee. He joined the athletic department in July of 1999 as the assistant athletic media relations director and was then promoted to director four months later, serving in that capacity until the fall of 2007 when he was promoted to associate athletic director.

The Ruston native is the primary media contact for women's basketball and softball, assists in a number of areas of football and oversees the daily operations for the entire department. He spent his first 10 years serving as the primary contact for football (as well as women's basketball, softball and golf) where he worked with record-setting NFL quarterbacks Tim Rattay and Luke McCown before restructuring the department and staffing responsibilities in 2009.

Butler also serves as a member of Athletic Director Tommy McClelland's senior staff and is the sports supervisor for women's tennis.

Over the course of his tenure, Louisiana Tech's Athletic Communications Department has proven to be one of the most successful in the state. Over the past 15 years, members of the department have won a total of 68 awards at the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) SID contest, the second most behind only LSU. During that same period of time, Butler has personally garnered 33 awards, the most among all state SIDs, including first place awards for media guides, game notes and feature stories.

He and members of his staff have also finished in the top 10 numerous times in the CoSIDA publications contests.

Butler is part of a senior staff at LA Tech that has been instrumental in garnering a number of national awards, including the 2010 Turnkey PRISM Award - which recognized colleges for managerial excellence across four areas: marketing/branding; fan development; community relations; and customer/client service.

The Tech athletics department also finished in the Top 10 three times in the Excellence in Management Cup, which recognized the most efficient athletic departments in the nation. He was instrumental in forming the partnership between Louisiana Tech and CBS Interactive in the fall of 2007, including the redesign and hosting of the athletic departments website, LATechSports.com.

As part of the agreement with CBS Interactive, a webstreaming platform - LA Tech All-Access -- was created, allowing fans from all over the world to watch live streams of almost all of the university's home athletic events. LA Tech All-Access annually streams more than 125 live events.

Butler has served as the host media coordinator for three NCAA Women's Basketball First- and Second-Round sites hosted by Louisiana Tech (2000, 2001 and 2003) while also serving as the host media coordinator for the 2008 WAC Baseball Championships and the 2013 WAC Softball Championships hosted by Louisiana Tech.

In addition to his media relations responsibilities, Butler has served as the radio play-by-play voice for the nationally-prominent Louisiana Tech Lady Techster basketball team for the past 16 years. He has broadcast more than 500 women's basketball games, including 15 NCAA Tournament games. He finished second in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association College Radio Play by Play contest in 2013 and 2016 (finishing behind LA Tech Hall of Famer Dave Nitz both years) and in third place in 2015.

He has broadcast in excess of 300 softball games, including four in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, and served as the color commentator on numerous Bulldog football and basketball broadcasts. He is also entering his fourth year serving as the sideline reporter for the Bulldog football broadcasts. He co-hosts Inside Tech Basketball with Dave Nitz, an hour-long coach's radio show during the winter.

Butler implemented a fundraising campaign for his department in the fall of 2007 and since that time it has raised over $50,000, which has been used to purchase additional equipment, software and other essentials within the media relations department.

A 1994 graduate of the Louisiana Tech journalism department, Butler served as the sports editor and editor of The Tech Talk, the University's student newspaper. He won the Wiley W. Hilburn, Jr. Award for the outstanding journalism student at Louisiana Tech in 1994 while also being the recipient of the Kerry Garland Memorial Scholarship presented by the Shreveport Journalism Foundation. He also earned the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Student Award (1994).

He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA), United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). He is also a proxy voter for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame committee.
