Football Wins WAC in Inaugural Season

Malcolm Butler & Buddy Davis interview Luke McCown in 2001

In only its first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, the Louisiana Tech football team proved the so-called experts wrong as they captured the league title and earned a spot in the Humanitarian Bowl. Tech, which was picked last in the preseason polls, won its final six league games of the season, including a title-clinching 19-7 win over Tulsa at Skelly Stadium in the regular season finale.

With the title, the Bulldogs earned their first bowl berth since the 1990 Independence Bowl.
