Laticia Watson Sets School Pentathlon Record at Vanderbilt Invitational
Jan. 23, 2015
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Laticia Watson recorded personal best marks in the final three events of the five-event pentathlon competition and set a new school record with 3,302 points scored in the event on the first day of the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational in Nashville Friday.
Watson finished seventh overall in the pentathlon, edging Middle Tennessee's Jessica Howell by four points and beating Western Kentucky's Alexandra Morrow by 163 points. The challenging Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational is hosting three top-25 teams on the women's side while No. 13 Alabama leads three men's teams ranked in the top-40.
Watson's point total of 3,302 points breaks the school record of 3,267 set by Jesseka Jones at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. While she capped the competition with more than a 30-second improvement in her best 800m time, her most impressive mark in the pentathlon came in the long jump where her mark of 18-8.5 (5.70m) topped a personal best jump by over a foot.
Two other Louisiana Tech athletes set personal record marks in the long jump but they came in the open long jump competition also held Friday. Denisha Henix finished fourth in the event with a jump of 91-9.5 (6.03m), a jump that was matched by teammate Mia Adams who also registered a personal best jump. Charla Craddock finished seventh with a jump of 19-5.5 (5.93m).
Also on the women's side, Chloe Lautric finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-7.25 (1.71m). That height ties Jess Loyd (2003) for the sixth-best mark in school history.
On the men's side, Gregory Ballard registered a height of 15-1 (4.60m) in the pole vault with a mark that ties for fourth-best in school history as he placed 11th in the event.
Action at the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational will resume and conclude on Saturday.
