Chelsea Hayes Sets New Long Jump School Record at AState Invitational Friday

JONESBORO, ARk. - All-America jumper Chelsea Hayes set a new school record and the nation's best long jump mark of the 2012 season Friday afternoon as action began at the AState Invitational in Jonesboro.

Hayes jumped 20-11.25 (6.38m) besting her old school record of 20-9.75 set at the WAC Indoor Championships last year. Although the indoor season is only a month old, Hayes mark ranks first in the nation topping the previous national leader - TCU's Whitney Gipson with a jump of 20-7.75 on Jan. 14 - by more than three inches.

Louisiana Tech had jumpers finish in the top six spots in the event with Kenyattia Hackworth placing second with a jump of 18-11.25 (5.77m) and Tia Mitchell jumping 18-9.25 (5.72m) to finish third. Charla Craddock finished fourth with a mark of 18-1 (5.51m), Marlesia Carey jumped 17-8.25 (5.39m) to finish fifth and Danielle Zenon rounded out the group with a jump of 17-6.25 (5.34m), finishing sixth.

In the weight throw, Micara Vassell set a new personal record with a mark of 52-7.25 (16.03m), the ninth-longest throw in school history. Vassell finished fourth in the event with Sabrittany Angelle placing fifth with a throw of 49-10.5 (15.20m). Marcella LeBlanc threw 47-6.25 (14.48m) to finish sixth while her sister, Jasmine LeBlanc, threw 40-7.5 (12.38m) to place 11th.

On the men's side, Deven Henderson jumped 23-3.5 (7.10m) in the long jump to place third while Anthony Bushay finished sixth with a mark of 22-4.25 (6.81m).
