Lattin, Ballard Lead LA Tech on Day 1 of C-USA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tamario Lattin earned two medals on the day while Gregory Ballard broke his own school record Saturday as Louisiana Tech wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2017 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
In the first field event on Saturday afternoon, LA Tech’s Lattin was awarded the silver medal in the men’s high jump after tying for second with a mark of 6-8.25 (2.04m). Later that night to cap off the first day of competition, Lattin earned his second medal of the day with a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 24-11.75 (7.61m) only behind WKU’s Ventavius Sears.
Ballard, a junior for the Bulldogs, broke his own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 16-01.75 (4.92m) to earn bronze at the indoor championships. True freshman Daniel Sams also impressed in the pole vault by placing fifth with a personal-best mark of 15-07.75 (4.77m) in the event.
Redshirt sophomore Jordan Patrick finished the first day of the championships in seventh place in the heptathlon with 2,629 points after completing the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump. The heptathlon concludes Sunday morning with Patrick set to compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
Jermey Hicks finished the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.73 to qualify for the finals Sunday afternoon, while he will also race in the men’s 200-meter finals Sunday after qualifying with a preliminary time of 21.37 on Saturday.
Saturday’s action concluded with LA Tech’s men completing in the distance medley relay, where the four Louisiana freshmen competing for the Bulldogs placed seventh with a time of 10:22.17 to earn two points for Tech in the final running event of the night.
All the action at the C-USA Championships wraps up Sunday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events starting at 1 p.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
