Jesseka Jones Finishes Sixth in Pentathlon on First Day of WAC Indoor Championships
Feb. 25, 2010
NAMPA, Idaho - Jesseka Jones put Louisina Tech's women's track and field team on the board during the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Thursday as she finished sixth in the pentathlon at the Jackson Track Facility just outside of Boise.
Jones opened the day by winning the 60m hurdles and clinched sixth in the pentathlon by finishing sixth in the 800m, the pentathlon's final event. The score in the first event of the championship meet already puts the Lady Techsters ahead of the 2009 mark when LA Tech did not score in the pentathlon. The men's team did not field an athlete in the heptathlon. Jones scored 1,967 points while teammate Markeva Daye, who finished 11th in the pentathlon, scored 1,955 points.
"[The pentathlon] was a hard-fought competition and I am very pleased with Jesseka finishing sixth and scoring three points," said Louisiana Tech head coach Gary Stanley. "That's what this thing is all about - scoring points as often as possible."
Louisiana Tech is sitting in fourth place after one complete event. Idaho, who had athletes finish 1-2 in the pentathlon, has an overall lead early in the meet. Both Jones and Daye opened the meet by setting personal-best times in the 60m hurdles with Jones running 8.65 and Daye finishing sixth with a time of 9.26.
"It is important to get off to a strong start like that and I am glad to see them running the hurdles well," Stanley said. "That being said, it is just one of five events in the pentathlon. The multi-events are a lot like golf - it is not how many good shots you can make but how few bad ones you make. But they are getting better and we were able to score some points today."
Daye's mark of 5' 2.5" in the high jump is a personal record and the best mark of any Lady Techster this season as she finished tied for fourth in the pentathlon's second event.
Day two action in the 2010 WAC Indoor Championships, which is being held at the Jackson Track Facility on the outskirts of Boise, gets started at 12:45 p.m. CT/11:45 a.m. MT.
