Tiana Davis Wins Long Jump Title in Day Two of WAC Indoor Championships
Feb. 26, 2010
NAMPA, Idaho - Tiana Davis set a personal record mark of 19' 8" and claimed the WAC title in the long jump as action continued in day two of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Jackson Track Facility just outside of Boise.
After two days of competition, the women's team is in third place with 30 points while the men's team is in fourth place with 13 points. However, both teams are looking to make their biggest mark in several of the finals races on Saturday.
"We almost had a perfect day today," said Louisiana Tech head coach Gary Stanley. "It is probably the best first day that we've had in the 22 years I have been the head coach at Louisiana Tech. We traditionally come out in last place but coming out of today in third place is good. It sets us up well for tomorrow but we have to remember that they don't give points for prelims. We have to come out tomorrow like we did today."
The crown in the long jump was a 1-2 punch in the event as Quatisha Williams finished second with a mark of 18' 11.75" as both Davis and Williams earned first team all-WAC honors.
The men's distance medley relay team finished a strong second, only a minute away from the school record time they ran earlier this season. Alwayne Greene, Wade McGaha, Jermaine Morris and Matt Wolfe combined for a time of 10:02.85, edging Boise State for second place by six-hundredths of a second.
Micarra Vassell set a personal record mark in the shot put with a throw of 46' 1.5" as she finished fourth while Tierah Hall placed sixth with a makr of 45' 5.75". Both Vassell and Hall earned second team all-WAC honors.
Jonathan Roque opened the day's competition with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, setting a personal record with a height of 6' 6.75" while Larry Jones threw 56' 6.5" in the weight throw to finish sixth.
Louisiana Tech sent multiple runners to the finals in all of the sprints and hurdles events, all of which have a chance to score on Saturday.
The 2010 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude Saturday in Nampa, Idaho with action beginning at 11 a.m. MT in the field events and 1 p.m. MT in the running events.
