Throwers Lead Tech at Mississippi Open

OXFORD, Miss. - Micara Vassell finished in the top two in two different events while Marcella LeBlanc and Joshua Cox added three more top-five finishes as the Louisiana Tech throwers highlighted Tech’s appearance at the Mississippi Open Saturday.
Vassell won the discus with a throw of 159-7 (48.65m) and then finished second in the shot put with a mark of 45-11.25 (14.00m), just shy of Memphis’ Allison Hotz winning throw of 46-1.5 (14.06m).
Marcella LeBlanc placed fifth in both events with a throw of 44-0.75 (13.43m) in the shot put and a mark of 129-5 (39.46m) in the discus.
On the men’s side, Joshua Cox placed fifth in the javelin with a mark of 195-4 (59.55m).
Dennis Richardson led the men’s sprinters with a 14th place finish in the 200m, running 21.70 while John Franklin placed 29th with a time of 22.32. Ed Ivory led the 100m dash sprinters with a time of 10.71, placing 16th.
On the women’s side, the Lady Techsters had three sprinters finish in the top five in the 200m with Stacia Hanneman running 24.41 to finish second. Kimberly Smith ran 24.54 to finish fourth while Victoria Wade finished fifth with a time of 24.66.
In the 100m dash, Kim Francis ran 12.07 to finish eighth.
Louisiana Tech returns to action this weekend competing at the Southeastern Invitational in Hammond on Friday, April 20 followed by the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge on Saturday, April 21.
