Sprinters, Hurdlers Advance to C-USA Championship Finals for LA Tech

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech’s Jarrett Samuels and Janiel McDonald each recorded fifth-place finishes in the long jump while Jermey Hicks and Tramaine Maloney each advanced as action wrapped up on the third day of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Murfreesboro.

Saturday’s action – the third of the four-day meet – saw finals competed in field events while most running events were prelims to whittle down large fields for Sunday’s finals races.

Samuels jumped 23-11.75 (7.31m) Saturday afternoon as he recorded a fifth-place finish in the long jump while Tamario Lattin recorded a career-best jump o f23-8.75 (7.23m) to finish seventh, scoring two points. Lattin would also finish ninth in the high jump with a mark of 6-7 (2.01m).

On the women’s side Janiel McDonald also registered a career-best mark, jumping 19-8.25 (6.00m) to finish fifth while Mia Adams followed in sixth, jumping 19-6.75 (5.96m).

Saturday’s action ended with LA Tech’s women climbing up to eighth place with 12 points, just four points behind UAB and 1.5 points ahead of North Texas. The men’s team sits in ninth place with 9.5 points, 4.5 points behind FIU’s 14 points.

More points are sure to come to the Bulldogs Sunday as Hicks ran a prelims-best 100m dash time of 10.36 to automatically advance while Maloney also automatically advanced, winning his prelims heat and finishing second overall with a prelims time of 14.18 in the 110m hurdles.

Darius Statham also advanced for the Bulldogs after running 47.97 in the 400m prelims, finishing third. Brandi Dobbin advanced to Sunday’s finals for the Lady Techsters after running 1:01.86 in the 400m hurdles.

Gregory Ballard added 2.5 points for the Bulldogs as he tied for sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 14-8 (4.47m).

The final day of action at the 2016 C-USA Outdoor Championships begins at 2:30 p.m. CT Sunday with field events while running events start at 3:30 p.m.
