2012 NCAA East Preliminary Championships
Hodges Stadium, Jacksonville, Fla.
May 25, 2012

Redshirt senior Chelsea Hayes

On advancing to the NCAA Championships in the 100-meter dash:

“My goal was just to finish top three in my heat. Knowing this meet is just about place and not about time because the goal is to just get to nationals. If you run 11.1 and still don’t finish in the top three, it doesn’t matter. It is all about where you finish.”

On qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials (A standard) in both 100m and long jump:

“I’m relieved that I finally hit the A standard in the long jump. It was a long time coming. I am just relieved I finally hit the A standard and can just focus on jumping farther.”

On training to be competitive in so many events:

“It all starts before indoor season with my training schedule. I do a lot of stuff early on to help prepare me for the events I am competing in now, like running in the 4x400m relay [during the regular season]. It helps a lot.”

On expectations of 4x100-meter relay tomorrow:

“I believe we really have a chance. Watching Kimberly [Smith] in her heat [in the 100-meter dash], she was the first one out of the blocks and she is our first leg tomorrow. As long as we get the stick around, I think we have a good chance at going [to Des Moines].”
