Chelsea Hayes Shatters School Record, Advances to NCAA Championships in the Long Jump

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Louisiana Tech senior Chelsea Hayes shattered her own school record and recorded the best long jump mark in the nation this weekend as she advanced to the NCAA Championships in June. Hayes also moved on to the quarterfinals in the 100m dash as action got underway at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington.
Hayes mark of 21-4 (6.50m) tops her previous school record mark of 20-11.25 (6.38m) set in Ruston, La. on April 2. Her mark was the best jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Round out of 48 total competitors. Southern Miss's Tori Bowie was the next-best jumper with a mark of 20-10.5 (6.36m). In the West Preliminary Round held in Eugene, Ore., the top mark was TCU's Whitney Gipson with a jump of 21-0.5 (6.41m).
By finishing in the top 12 in the East Preliminary Round, Hayes moves on to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11.
Hayes also advanced to the quarterfinal round in the 100m dash as she finished 19th with a time of 11.61.The New Orleans native will attempt to punch her second ticket to Des Moines in the 100m quarterfinals on Friday in Bloomington.
Also advancing to Friday's quarterfinal round is senior Monique Wright in the 400m. Wright ran 54.36 to finish ninth overall in the East Preliminary opening round to advance.
On the men's side, Ruston native Larry Jones finished 28th in the shot put with a throw of 54-2.5 (16.52m), ending his season in that event. Jones will have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Des Moines when he throws the discus on Saturday.
In the men's 100m dash, freshman Dennis Richardson ended his season after running 10.84 to place 41st overall.
Action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round continues in Bloomington Friday on the campus of Indiana University with Brittany Guy competing in the triple jump and Trey Hadnot competing in the 200m along with the 100m and 400m quarterfinals. The men's and women's 4x100m relay teams will compete on Saturday along with Micara Vassell and Larry Jones in the discus.
