EUGENE BOUND! Mia Adams Advances to NCAA Championships
May 26, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Louisiana Tech senior Mia Adams punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the long jump as action began Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
Adams top mark was set on her second of three attempts but her advancing spot was far from secure at that point. Her jump of 20-2.5 (6.16m) ranked ninth at the time but other competitors began whittling away at that place. A few jumpers later and Adams was 10th, then 11th. She would fall one more place to 12th before finishing there, securing the final advancing spot to the NCAA Championships, her first trip to the final rounds.
An impressive finish for the McDonough, Georgia native as she entered the week ranked 21st in the East.
Meanwhile on the track, Jermey Hicks left little doubt in the 100m dash opening round. The junior sprinter won his heat with an impressive time of 10.28 – beating Florida’s Ryan Clark by 0.05 seconds – to automatically advance to the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
Jarrett Samuels saw his collegiate season come to a close Thursday as he finished 22nd in the long jump with a mark of 24-3.25 (7.41m). His finish marked a big improvement over his East prelims ranking as the senior entered the meet ranked 45th.
Action at the NCAA East Prelims continues Friday as Hicks returns to the track for the 200m prelims. Also in action Friday will be Tramaine Maloney in the 110m hurdles and Chloe Lautric in the high jump.
