Charla Craddock Advances to Saturday's 200m Quarterfinals
May 30, 2015
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A little distraction can be a good thing. For Charla Craddock, distraction prompted her to run the ninth-fastest 200m time in school history as she advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
A standout senior that has qualified for the NCAA East Prelims in four different events (200m, long jump, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay), Craddock was faced with competing in two events simultaneously Friday evening. She was scheduled for the third flight of the long jump while the fifth heat of the 200m was set to begin around the same time.
Moments after her first long jump attempt, Craddock ran to the other side of the track for the start of the 200m where she ran 23.42 and finish second in her heat (11th overall) to automatically advance to the quarterfinal round. She entered the prelims ranked 26th in the East and now she is among 24 sprinters in the quarterfinals that are competing for one of 12 advancing spots to the NCAA Championships in June.
Craddock has only run the 200m faster once before when she was timed at 23.41 at the Horned Frog Invitational earlier this month. And for the Farmersville, Texas native, that first long jump attempted proved to be her best as she placed 39th with a jump of 18-7.25 (5.67m) marking her third appearance in the NCAA Prelims in the event.
Mia Adams was the top finisher for Louisiana Tech in the long jump as she finished 15th with a mark of 19-8.25 (6.00m) as the redshirt junior transfer from Georgia State missed an advancing spot by less than three inches. Denisha Henix jumped 18-9.25 (5.72m) to finish 33rd. Both Adams and Henix were making their first prelims appearance in the long jump.
Also in Friday's action, Joshua Cox's collegiate career came to a close as he finished 20th in the javelin with a throw of 212-5 (64.74m). The senior from Ruston, Louisiana entered the prelims ranked 47th in the East.
Craddock's quarterfinal 200m race is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT but there will be distractions for the senior yet again as she is scheduled to run in the 4x100m relay at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT as well as the 4x400m relay at 9:25 p.m. ET/8:25 p.m. CT. Both Craddock and Adams are competing in four events over the three day East Preliminary Championship meet. Also competing Saturday will be Chloe Lautric in the high jump.
