RUSTON, La. - Neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night will stop Louisiana Tech's track and field program from competing in Birmingham Thursday. Despite inclement weather in the area the Southern Miss-hosted KMS Invitational will still be held at the CrossPlex, albeit on a two-hour delay.
Originally scheduled to start at noon, the schedule has been pushed back to a 2 p.m. CT start to help accommodate teams traveling to Birmingham. The field events will start with the women's weight throw at 2 p.m. and wrap up with the men's shot put at 8:45 p.m. while the running events start at 2 p.m. with the men's 60m dash and finish with the men's 4x400m relay at 9:40 p.m.
Louisiana Tech will face 18 other teams in the meet, including conference foes from Southern Miss, Tulane and UAB. LA Tech will also face Georgia State and Louisiana-Monroe in the meet.
The women's team was recently ranked ninth in the South Central Region, one spot ahead of TCU, and will be led in the field events by Pamela Lee. Recently tying the school record in the high jump, Lee enters the meet with the best mark this season and will be competing against 15 other jumpers in the event.
On the track, Kim Francis will try to replicate her near school record time from two weeks ago in the 60m hurdles. A senior, Francis enters the meet with the best hurdles time among any collegiate hurdler in the field. She is, however, expected to face professional hurdler Kimberley Laing in the finals, a former University of Alabama hurdler.
On the men's side the Bulldogs were recently ranked 45th in the nation and the Bulldog jumpers get a boost Thursday as Adairius Barnes makes his indoor season debut in the triple jump. Barnes, also a starting cornerback on the LA Tech football team, will go against triple jumpers from Bethune-Cookman, Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Miss in his first meet of the year.
