Louisiana Tech Women's Track and Field Ranked 30th in Nation

Feb. 14, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Louisiana Tech’s women’s track and field team rose one spot in the nation rankings to 30th, jumping over Oklahoma with a long jump mark by a New Orleans native that ranks first in the nation.

Chelsea Hayes, a product of Abramson High School, long jump mark of 21-8 (6.60m) set a Western Athletic Conference record last week at the Tyson Invitational and is currently the national leader in the event. Her mark automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boise, Idaho on March 9-10 and provisionally qualified her for the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. on June 22-26.

Hayes leads the Lady Techsters as the team received 30.73 points in the latest national rankings by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associatino (USTFCCCA). She is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the 60m dash and 24th in the nation in the 200m dash. Her 60m dash time ranks her third in the region.

While ranked 30th in the nation the Lady Techsters are ranked ninth in the South Central Region, an area defined by schools in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Tech is less than a quarter of a point behind Rice and has a 12 point advantage on SMU in the regional rankings.

Also ranked in the region is Micara Vassell in the shot put (sixth) and Kenyattia Hackworth in the long jump (eighth).

On the men’s side, the Bulldogs are ranked 17th in the regional rankings after falling two spots. Trey Hadnot leads the men with a fifth-place ranking in the regional slates in the 200m.

Competing against schools such as Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, TCU and Houston, the South Central Region is one of the most competitive regions in the country.

Louisiana Tech next returns to action on Feb. 23-25 as Tech heads to the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women’s program has won 13 of the last 14 WAC titles but after losing 11 seniors from last year’s team, the Lady Techsters face a daunting task ahead in order to keep the championship streak alive.
