LA Tech's Hadnot, Hayes Claim WAC Honors Again

Feb. 14, 2012

DENVER - Louisiana Tech’s Trey Hadnot and Chelsea Hayes were once again named the WAC track and field athletes of the week after more record-setting performances from the duo.

Hayes was named the WAC’s female field athlete of the week while Hadnot claimed the league’s male track athlete of the week honors. This is the second time this indoor season the duo have won the award in the same week.

Hayes, a senior from New Orleans, La. (Butler County CC), reclaimed the national lead and automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend with a jump of 21-8 (6.60m) in the long jump. That mark not only set a school record, but also set a Western Athletic Conference record, topping the 21-5.25 (6.53m) jump of Boise State’s Eleni Kafourou in 2009. With the mark, Hayes won the long jump championship competition at the prestigious Tyson Invitational and provisionally qualified for the US Olympic Trials in June.

The Abramson High School product leads a Tech team that was recently ranked 30th in the nation by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Hadnot, a sophomore from Ruston, La. (Ruston HS), ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 200-meters last Saturday, running a 21.22 at the Tyson Invitational. That mark is second in Tech history only to his 21.04 time from Jan. 27 and is 0.18 seconds better than any other Western Athletic Conference sprinter. Hadnot is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the 200-meters. He also ran a season-best time of 47.85 in the 400-meters, a mark that leads the WAC and is more than half a second better than any other WAC sprinter not from Louisiana Tech.

Louisiana Tech next returns to action on Feb. 23-25 as Tech heads to the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women’s program has won 13 of the last 14 WAC titles but after losing 11 seniors from last year’s team, the Lady Techsters face a daunting task ahead in order to keep the championship streak alive.
