Lady Techster Track and Field Ranked 27th Nationally

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Louisiana Tech women’s track and field team climbed six spots to 27th in the national rankings following the team’s fourth place finish at the WAC Indoor Championships. The team remained ninth in the South Central regional rankings.

Chelsea Hayes is ranked in the top 10 nationally in two events. Her long jump mark of 21-8 (6.60m) ranks second nationally and automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championships on March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho. Last weekend at the WAC Championships in Boise, the New Orleans native ran 7.24 in the 60m dash, setting a new school, facility, WAC and WAC Championship record in the sprint with a time that ranks sixth nationally this year. She is also expected to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 60m dash as well.

A redshirt senior, Hayes is also ranked 21st in the nation in the 200m dash with a time of 23.63. Her times in the 60m and 200m dashes at the WAC Championships pushed Tech up six spots in the national rankings this week; the Lady Techsters were ranked 33rd last week entering the WAC Championships.LA Tech is ranked ahead of SMU and leapfrogged Baylor, South Carolina, UConn and Cincinnati in the rankings.

The team remained ninth in the South Central regional rankings, an area consisting of schools in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Hayes is first in the region in the 60m and second in the region in the long jump while Micara Vassell’s shot put throw of 50-10 (15.49m) at the WAC Championships ranks sixth in the region.

The men’s team remained 18th in the region, above of Louisiana-Monroe and Southeastern Louisiana. The team is 89th in the national rankings. The Bulldogs are led by Trey Hadnot’s 200m time of 21.04 which ranks 15th in the nation and sixth in the region.

Hadnot, along with Hayes, is expected to qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 9-10 in Boise.
