March 14, 2012
NEW ORLEANS, La. - After finishing second in the nation in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named Louisiana Tech's Chelsea Hayes first team All-America. Hayes also claimed second team honors in the 60m dash while Trey Hadnot was named second team in the 200m.
Hayes has now been awarded four All-America awards, second in program history only to the five All-America honors Bryant Wesco won in the triple jump from 1997-2000. A native of New Orleans, she has also been named All-America in 2011 (indoor long jump and outdoor long jump).
The track and field All-American honors were officially announced by the USTFCCCA this week.
Hayes' school and Western Athletic Conference record jump of 21-8.25 (6.61m) earned her first team honors as she finished as the national runner-up. She also finished 15th in the 60m dash with a time of 7.43, garnering second team honors.
Trey Hadnot was named second team All-America as he finished 13th in the 60m dash with a time of 21.24.
Through the 2012 indoor season, Louisiana Tech's track and field program has now claimed 52 All-America honors in its history, dating back to Bruce Lenoir claiming All-America honors in the 200 yard dash in 1954.
Louisiana Tech is home to over 20 conference championships in track and field including the women's program winning 13 of the last 15 WAC titles across the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Tech opens the 2012 outdoor season this week in Lafayette at the Louisiana Classics. There, the Lady Techsters will begin their quest for an eighth consecutive WAC outdoor title.
