Tech Track & Field Claims Two Weekly Honors from the WAC

March 29, 2011

DENVER - Louisiana Tech freshman Kim Francis was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while senior Larry Jones was named the WAC Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the week of March 21-27. This is the first such honor for Francis.

Francis, a freshman from Youngsville, La. (Northside HS), ran 13.51 in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles at the LSU Relays over the weekend. Her time currently ranks 20th in the nation, 14th in the NCAA East Region and is the best time in the Western Athletic Conference so far this season. Francis improved her time three-tenths of a second from her preliminary heat to the finals race. She also was part of the 4x100m relay team that posted a preliminary time of 45.52, ranking first in the WAC.

An 11-time Louisiana state high school champion, Francis won the WAC 60m hurdles title during the indoor season.

Jones, a senior from Ruston, La. (Ruston HS), set a pair of WAC-leading throws this past weekend at the LSU Relays. He threw a personal-best mark of 57 feet, 10.25 inches (17.63 meters) in the shot put, winning the event. His mark is more than two feet longer than his previous career-best mark and currently ranks him ninth in the nation and first in the WAC. In addition, Jones also finished fourth in the discus at the meet with a throw of 168-3 (51.28m), ranking him first in the WAC.

Both Francis and Jones will be in action in Ruston this Saturday, April 2, as Louisiana Tech hosts the Jim Mize Invitational. Throwing events start at 2 p.m. while running events start at 4 p.m.
