NEW ORLEANS, La. - Louisiana Tech's men's track and field team jumped six spots to No. 36 in the national rankings the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday.
The big jump is primarily a result of a big jump by Jarvis Gotch last weekend at the UTEP Invitational. His long jump mark of 26-0.25 (7.93m) tied for the national lead.
The Bulldogs No. 36 ranking is the highest that LA Tech has climbed since the USTFCCCA began rankings track and field programs in 2008. LA Tech was ranked No. 59 in the preseason and moved to No. 42 in last week's rankings release.
The highest any LA Tech team has ever been ranked was the women's team in 2012 as they climed as high as No. 31 before finishing the season ranked 34th.
This past week the women's team fell three spots to No. 82 after a tough weekend in El Paso.
Action this weekend marks the return of Louisiana Tech to its native state for the first time in a month as the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters will compete at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
