Tech Track Athletes in National Rankings

As Louisiana Tech’s track and field program heads to Baton Rouge for the team’s last meet in its home state this year, special attention should be paid to how some of the athletes fare against the nation’s best competition.

The (women’s) program’s domination in the Western Athletic Conference has been often chronicled (12 of the last 13 WAC titles belong to the Lady Techsters) but today we take a look at some of the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters in the national rankings.

Chelsea Hayes has not only set or tied two school records this outdoor season, but she is in the top 20 in the national rankings in two events and is even in the world rankings in those events. Hayes’ 20-11.25 mark in the long jump ranks her fifth in the nation and 22nd in the world while her 11.30 time in the 100m dash is ranked 16th in the nation and 32nd in the world. Hayes is also ranked 83rd in the nation with her only 200m dash time of the season, something she is expected to improve upon.

Tiana Davis is also ranked in the long jump as her mark of 20-1.5 places her 32nd in the nation while her 13.43 time in the 100m hurdles ranks 38th in the nation. Kim Francis is also ranked nationally in the 100m hurdles, listed as 49th with a time of 13.62.

On the men’s side, Ruston native Larry Jones is ranked 14th in the nation in the discus with a throw of 186-0 while his shot put mark of 58-7.25 ranks 22nd.

Freshman Dennis Richardson is ranked 25th in the nation in the 100m after running 10.34. He is also a part of the 4x100m relay team that ran 40.21 and is ranked 33rd in the nation.
