LA Tech Track & Field Set to Open C-USA Championships Thursday

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech Track and Field is heading to west Texas this week as the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters prepare to compete in the 2017 Conference USA Outdoor Championships, hosted by UTEP in El Paso, Texas.
The meet is hosted by the Miners and scheduled to begin Thursday, May 11 with the decathlon and heptathlon competitions beginning that afternoon. The four-day meet will be held at Kidd Field Stadium on the campus of UTEP. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com. A four-day pass can be purchased for $20 or a daily ticket can be purchased for $8 for adults or $4 for kids.
Louisiana Tech is searching for its first Conference USA outdoor title since joining the league in the summer of 2013, but the two teams are no strangers to capturing conference titles overall, as the women have claimed eight outdoor championship titles and the men four in the program's history.
Louisiana Tech will have a total of 30 student-athletes making the trip to El Paso this weekend with an even 15 women competing and 15 men. The Bulldogs and Lady Techsters will combine to compete in 21 field events and 18 running events over a four-day stretch at Kidd Field in El Paso.
On Thursday, the action will get underway as Louisiana Tech will have two student-athletes competing in the decathlon in Jordan Patrick and Jacob Cambre. At last year's C-USA Outdoor Championships, Patrick set a new school record in the decathlon after finishing the competition in eighth place with 6,063 points.
Beginning Friday morning, the women's hammer throw competition will begin at 11 a.m. CT, as LA Tech will have two student-athletes entered with Morgan Keesee and Anji Garcia-Solis representing the Lady Techsters. Keesee will also compete in the discus beginning Saturday afternoon along with Asia Abron and Rhea Thompson. Abron and Thompson are also entered in the shot put event on the women's side, which is set to begin late Sunday afternoon. On the men's side, Isaac Samuels is scheduled to compete in both the shot put and discus this week in El Paso.
LA Tech's Tamario Lattin will have a busy week as he is scheduled to compete in the high jump, long jump and triple jump for the Bulldogs, while the women will have Chloe Lautric and Jasmine White in the high jump, Dominique Lewis competing in the triple jump and Janiel McDonald in the long jump.
The Lady Techsters will have Alies Van Berkum competing in the women's pole vault late Saturday afternoon, while Gregory Ballard and Daniel Sams will represent the Bulldogs in the men's pole vault, which is set for Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday evening, LA Tech have three men entered in the 1,500-meter run with Drake Heinz, Conner Killian and Austin Ballow all scheduled to race, while Ballow and Heinz will also run in the 5,000-meter race on Sunday night. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, LA Tech will be represented by Nathan Bolner for the men and Kacie Kaufman for the women.
In addition to the long jump, LA Tech's Janiel McDonald is entered in the 100-meter hurdles, while Brandi Dobbin will compete in the women's 400-meter hurdles, both scheduled for Sunday afternoon. For the men, Michael Pratt will race in the 110-meter hurdles and Lanorris Graden in the 400-meter hurdles on Sunday.
LA Tech's women will have two athletes competing in the 100-meter dash with Ona Giles and Morgan White scheduled to race on Saturday afternoon, while Giles will also compete in the 200-meter dash on Sunday afternoon. Wrapping up the running events for the women will be Elia Nero, who will compete in the 800-meter run on Saturday night.
The men will have Darius Statham competing in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes on Sunday evening, while Scott Maggio is also scheduled to compete in the 800-meter run on Sunday night to round out a full week of competition for both squads.
