Louisiana Tech Track and Field Receives 17 Qualification Bids for NCAA East Preliminary Championships

May 19, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Louisiana Tech’s track and field programs recorded a total of 17 qualification bids for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships set for May 27-28 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Women’s sprinter/jumper Chelsea Hayes leads the program as she qualified for three events.

The women’s program is coming off its seventh consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship and has claimed 13 of the last 14 overall titles but Tech is the only WAC school assigned to the East Preliminary Championships. The remaining WAC schools will compete at the West Preliminary Championships in Eugene, Ore.

To qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Championships, an athlete must have one of the top 48 marks among individual events or a relay team must have one of the top 24 times in a school’s respective region.

All-America jumper Chelsea Hayes qualified in the long jump, the 100m dash and the 4x100m relay. The New Orleans native jumped her way to an eighth place finish and all-America honors during the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. Hayes was recently named the 2011 WAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.

Ruston native Larry Jones qualified in both the shot put and the discus, the event where he recently claimed his third consecutive WAC title. Jones claimed the 2011 WAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year honors last week at the WAC Championships in Hawaii along with three all-WAC first team honors.

Freshman Trey Hadnot, also a Ruston native, qualified in the 200m and the 4x100m relay a week after winning four gold medals at the WAC Championships.

Of the 48 qualifiers in each region, 24 will advance to the quarterfinal round on May 28 and the top 12 in each region will move on to the semifinal round beginning June 9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
