DES MOINES, Iowa - Louisiana Tech's women's track and field program opens competition at the NCAA Championships Wednesday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines armed with six women qualifying with five entries.
The championship meet starts Wednesday and continues through Saturday with Thursday and Friday's action broadcast on ESPN3 and Saturday's action televised on ESPNU. Wednesday and Thursday is comprised of semifinal rounds while Friday and Saturday will be finals events except in the women's long jump, which has both the semifinal and final rounds on Thursday.
In the sprints, hurdles and relays, the semifinal rounds are comprised of three heats with the top two advancing from each heat along with the next two best times for an eight-athlete field in the finals. In the jumps, the top nine marks overall from the semifinals advance to the finals.
Chelsea Hayes leads the program with three qualifying entries, competing in the 100m dash, long jump and as part of the 4x100m relay team. She is believed to be only one of three women to advance to the NCAA Championships in three different events and the only one to do so across multiple disciplines (i.e. sprints/relays and jumps).
A native of New Orleans, Hayes will run in the third heat of the 100m dash at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, less than an hour after the 4x100m relay runs in the second heat at 5:45 p.m.
On Thursday, Hayes and Kenyattia will compete in the long jump semifinals at 5:30 p.m. At 7:10 p.m., Kim Francis hits the track for the 100m hurdle semifinals.
The 100m dash finals are scheduled for 6:02 p.m. Friday and the relay and hurdles finals set for Saturday's ESPNU broadcast.
