U.S. Olympic Trials Start Friday, Hayes Leads Tech Athletes to Eugene

June 20, 2012

RUSTON, La. - Six-time All-American Chelsea Hayes leads a pair of Louisiana Tech athletes as the U.S. Olympic Trials in track and field begin Friday at historic Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Hayes will have at least two opportunities to be a part of the American delegation heading to the 2012 Olympic Games in London as she will be competing in both the 100m and the long jump over the next two weeks.

Her first chance will come Friday (June 22) where she will run in the qualifying (opening) round of the 100m dash at 8 p.m. CT.  Should she advance, the semifinal and final rounds will be at 5:40 p.m. CT and 7:52 p.m. CT, respectively, on Saturday (June 23).

On June 29, Hayes will compete in the qualifying round of the women’s long jump at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Also competing on June 29 will be former Louisiana Tech sprinter Michael Coleman, who recently hit the “A” standard in the 200m dash. He will run in the qualifying round at 3:45 p.m. CT on June 29 with the semifinal round slated for 8 p.m. CT on June 30.

The finals in both the women’s long jump and men’s 200m will be held on the final day of the U.S. Olympic Trials. The long jump finals will begin at 5 p.m. CT and the men’s 200m dash starting at 6:50 p.m. CT.

Also in line to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London is former thrower Jason Morgan, a native of Jamaica. Having set a new Jamaican national record in the discus earlier this year, Morgan is already expected to be a member of the Jamaican national team in London.

On June 26 at Log Cabin in Ruston, a fundraiser will be held to help defray some of the costs Morgan will incur in traveling to London for the Olympic Games. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of the proceeds that day to Morgan’s trip to London.

All three athletes – Hayes, Coleman and Morgan – continue to train in Ruston.
