Chelsea Hayes Named Louisiana's Field Athlete of the Year

July 1, 2012

BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Tech’s Chelsea Hayes continued to bring in honors and awards Sunday as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association named the New Orleans native the state’s Field Athlete of the Year.

Hayes’ honor tops the All-Louisiana Track and Field Teams announcement as Louisiana Tech had 13 honors bestowed on one of the dominant track and field programs in the state. Hayes was responsible for five of those honors and had the state’s best long jump mark of 21-10.25, set at the NCAA East Prelims in late May.

In addition to her dominance in the long jump, Hayes was also named All-Louisiana in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay. In the 4x100m relay, Hayes joined Kimberly Smith, Stacia Hanneman and Victoria Wade in running a school record time of 44.11 at the NCAA East Prelims, the second-best 4x100m relay time ran by a Louisiana school this year.

With one Louisiana Tech tie already heading to London (Jason Morgan), Sunday’s action at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene will give an opportunity to another tie. Chelsea Hayes is one of 12 athletes competing in the finals of the long jump with the top three being selected for Team USA. The long jump competition begins at 5 p.m. CT and is expected to be highlighted on NBC’s broadcast at 8 p.m. CT.

Micara Vassell and Marcella LeBlanc took two of the three All-Louisiana spots in the shot put while Kim Francis garnered 100m hurdles honors after running 13.21 at the NCAA East Prelims.

On the men’s side, Kendall Hayes was honored for his 13.99 time ran in the 110m hurdles at the WAC Championships while Yusuf Muhammad led the state with his 51.88 time in the 400m hurdles at the WAC Championships.

The men’s 4x100m relay team of Dennis Richardson, Trey Hadnot, John Franklin and Ed Ivory was honored with the relay’s mark of 40.45 at the Jim Mize Invitational in April.

Chelsea Hayes returns to competition Sunday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. as she competes in the finals of the long jump at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Entering the finals ranks seventh, Hayes will need to finish third or higher to make Team USA for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
