Track and Field Announces 14 Signees for 2013-14 Year

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech head track and field and cross country coach Gary Stanley announced its 2013 signing class Tuesday. The signing class includes numerous state champions and multiple members of junior college national championship teams.

Overall the coaching staff addressed several key areas of need with the 14-member signing class, bringing in a group of student-athletes that are proven winners.

The 2013 signing class includes seven sprinters, two distance runners, one hurdler and two throwers. From the signing class, five states are represented with six student-athletes hailing from Louisiana.

Some of the top signees are highlighted below.

Jermey Hicks is a graduate of Edna Karr High School in New Orleans where he won a 4A state championship in the 200m, running 21.53. He was also the state runner-up in the 100m with a time of 10.67 but brings a personal record time of 10.48 in the event. Hicks was also part of a club team that won a national championship 4x100m relay title at the New Balance National Championship with a time of 40.54. Hicks chose LA Tech over Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana.

Jaquvis Hart is a Shreveport product from Airline High School where he was a 5A state champion in the 400m with a time of 47.62. A multi-sport athlete at Airline, Hart also lettered in football and wrestling. He was the runner-up in the 400m at the nationally renowned Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. with a time of 47.46.

Darius Statham is a sprinter from Atlanta, Ga. (B.E. Mays High School) where he won a Georgia 5A state championship in the 400m, running 48.75. His personal record time in the event is 47.25 and was ran at the AAAG Sports Festival where he won the 17-19 year old division. Statham also brings a personal best time of 21.92 in the 200m.

Aminah Blount is a sprinter from South Plains Junior College where she led her team to a pair of national championships. She finished fourth in the 200m at the 2013 JuCo Indoor National Championships and has a personal best time of 23.96 in the outdoor 200m. Blount also ran multiple relay legs for the Lady Texans during her time at South Plains.



Denisha Henix was not just a multi-sport standout at Shreveport’s Northwood High School in basketball and track and field, she was also a multi-event standout. She sat out the 2013 track season due to an injury sustained during basketball season but was the 2012 4A state champion in both the long jump (19-0.5) and triple jump (38-4). Henix also brings a personal best mark of 5-6 in the high jump.
