LA Tech Cross Country Set to Compete in Conference USA Championships

Oct. 31, 2014

RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech men's and women's cross country teams return to action Saturday when they travel to Denton, Texas to compete in the 2014 Conference USA Championships.

The men will compete in an 8K race beginning at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs are coming off of their biggest challenge of the year when they traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and finished 20th in the Crimson Classic. This will be another tough test for the Bulldogs as Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice and UTEP are ranked in the top eight of their respective regions.

The women's race will feature a 5K beginning at 9 a.m. The Louisiana Tech women last ran in Lafayette where they finished sixth in the Ragin Cajuns Invitational. The competition will be no easier this weekend on the women's side as seven of the 13 teams come in ranked in the top 15 of their region.

"You do not like to talk about personal records a lot in a conference championship because you are running for place and conditions change so dramatically from week to week," said head coach Gary Stanley. "If every member of the team can run their best performance of this season, then I am going to be very happy. That is what I expect to happen and I expect nothing less than that. If they do that, win, lose or draw, I am going to be happy with them."

This will be Louisiana Tech's second opportunity this season to compete at Eagle Point Cross Country Course in Denton. Both the men and women competed in the Ken Garland Invitational in late September where the men finished second, while the women finished fifth.

"It is flat and fairly easy," said Stanley. "I think we are ready to run better than we have all year, both teams. The women have done a couple of pretty decent workouts the last couple of weeks and looked better. The men have looked pretty sharp. I have no idea how that will translate into the Conference USA field, which is a very tough conference. We'll see how it plays out."
