Parker Named Hitting Coach for Bulldog Baseball

Parker was a volunteer assistant for the Bulldogs in 2013

Olen Parker enters his second season as an assistant coach on the Bulldog baseball staff after being hired in 2012 by head coach Wade Simoneaux. Parker will begin his first season as the full-time hitting coach for the Bulldogs in 2013-14.

Parker, a former standout player and assistant coach at Grambling State, brings a wealth of experience to the Bulldog program from a personnel and playing standpoint by assisting with the catchers, bullpen, infielders and hitters on a day-to-day basis.

Parker has also helped assist Simoneaux in the annual Top Dawg Baseball Camps for the past 10 years and has been an integral part of the success of those camps in the past.

In his playing career, Parker spent two years at Western Oklahoma State College where he led the team in stolen bases (82) during his career, before transferring to Grambling where he made an immediate impact for the Tigers' baseball program.

Playing second base, Parker was a part of a team that defeated No. 4 ranked Florida State on the season's opening weekend and he capitalized that success on the diamond into a professional career.

After being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1986, Parker played three seasons, eventually advancing to Double A in the minor leagues.

Prior to taking the position at Grambling, he moved to Dallas, Texas in 2003 and coached the Dallas Heroes Collegiate Summer League team and led them to the Stan Musial Regional Tournament.

Two years later, Parker served as the Assistant Director of Baseball Operations for the Little Heroes Baseball Foundation in addition to earning the Director of Training title.

Aspiring to move into the professional ranks, he became a member of Major League Baseball Scout School and fared well in the classroom as he ranked second in a class of 50 scouts. His success in scout school led him to receive an associate scouting position with the Atlanta Braves.

A native of New Orleans, Parker is a 1983 graduate of St. Augustine High School and was a three-sport letter winner in football, basketball and baseball. A highly decorated player in high school, he was named the football team's Best First Year Player in 1981 and earned the Coaches Award in 1982 for his efforts on the gridiron.

On the hardwood, Parker teamed with current New Jersey Nets head coach Avery Johnson during the 1982-83 seasons and led the Purple Knights to a 35-0 state championship run.

In addition, Parker also shared the baseball diamond at St. Augustine with Ronald Marigny, a former professional baseball player with the Detroit Tigers and Scouting Supervisor with the Oakland A's.

Olen has been a highly successful recruiter on the collegiate level. He has had 15 players that he signed or coached make it to the professional ranks. The latest being Chris Wolfe.

Parker has worked for numerous baseball camps amongst highly respected Division I institutions, serving as hitting coach. He has also served as a hitting instructor at Baseball USA in Houston, Texas, TPX Top 96 and the Complete Showcase.

Parker has earned both a bachelor and master's degree from Grambling State University.
