RUSTON, La. - Alex Williams hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Louisiana Tech baseball team to a 5-4 victory over McNeese State Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
The Bulldogs have won five straight contests and are now 5-2, while the Cowboys drop to 1-4 on the year.
In the bottom of the second, catcher Kyle Arnsberg was hit by a pitch and senior Justin Gordey doubled to right field to bring up Kody Neel with runners in scoring position and no outs. After Neel walked to load the bases, third baseman Beau Bayliss singled to left field to drive in two runs and give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
McNeese St. tied the game at 2-2 after scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning.
Shortstop Ryan Gebhardt doubled to left field to lead off the bottom of the third to extend his hit streak to 24 games.
Williams reached on an infield single to bring up cleanup hitter Bre'shon Kimbell with runners at the corners and no outs. After a groundout by Kimbell, second baseman Austin Hedges hit a sacrifice fly as Gebhardt scored to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
The Cowboys scored two runs on three hits to take their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth (4-3) as Taylor Drake homered to left field, followed by an RBI single by catcher Renny Weber.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start in the bottom of the inning as Gordey and Gandy hit back-to-back singles to lead off the ninth. Bayliss attempted a sacrifice bunt and the Cowboys got the lead runner out, but threw the ball away when attempting to throw Bayliss out at first, advancing Gandy to third and Bayliss to second.
McNeese St. intentionally walked designated hitter Sam Alvis to bring up Gebhardt with bases loaded and one out.
Gebhardt reached on a fielder's choice as Gandy was thrown out at home, bringing up Williams with two outs.
Williams hit a first pitch fastball off the center field wall to drive in Bayliss and seal a 5-4 victory for the Bulldogs.
Junior Jamie Gilley pitched 4.1 innings, striking out seven Cowboy hitters, allowing four runs on nine hits.
Freshman Phil Maton pitched four scoreless innings in relief, striking out five.
Closer Caleb Dudley pitched 0.2 innings for the victory while Blake Ware recorded the loss for McNeese St. after allowing the walk-off single to Williams.
Weber went 3-for-4 for the Cowboys while Collin Todd and Drake each went 2-for-4 in the loss.
Tech returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they conclude their series against McNeese St. at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Junior Trevor Petersen (1-0) gets the start for Louisiana Tech while freshman Michael Clemens gets the call for the Cowboys.
