Final Stats

JONESBORO, Ark. - On cold day in Jonesboro, Louisiana Tech split a double-header with Arkansas State, first with a commanding victory, followed by a heartbreaking loss to the Red Wolves.

In game one of the double-header, Louisiana Tech put on an offensive clinic. The Bulldogs put up multiple runs in four different innings, including a sixth-run sixth inning, leading to an emphatic 19-3 win.

Marshall Boggs registered a career-high seven RBI in game one of the double header, thanks to a three-run home run and a grand slam. Boggs, Brent Diaz and Jordan Washam all had three or more hits in the contest. The trio were also the only Bulldogs to register multiple RBI as Diaz drove in four runs and Washam drove in two.

Kent Hasler got the start on the hill and moved to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander tossed six innings, allowing three runs and striking out five.

As a team, Louisiana Tech launched five home runs. Boggs, who homered twice, was joined by Chase Lunceford, Brent Diaz and Dustin Mitchell. This was the first time a Louisiana Tech team hit five home runs in a game since last May against Rice.

Arkansas State struck first in the bottom of the first inning, but Louisiana Tech responded by scoring 13 unanswered runs over the next six innings to take a commanding 13-1 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Diaz and Lunceford went back-to-back with one out in the inning. It was the first time this season that Louisiana Tech has hit back-to-back home runs.

Casey Sullivan came on to relieve Hasler to start the seventh inning. Sullivan tossed three-scoreless frames and allowed just a lone hit, while striking out five Red Wolves. In the bottom of the ninth, Sullivan pulled the rare feat of striking out four batters.

Mitchell became the second Bulldogs this season alone to homer for his first career collegiate hit. The freshman launched one over the wall in right center in the top of the ninth. Parker Bates homered in the season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff for his first career hit.

In game two, Arkansas State overcame an early 3-0 deficit and used a late score to edge Louisiana Tech, 6-5.

Marshall Boggs continued his incredible day at the plate, reaching base three times and driving in two more runs, totaling nine for the day. The senior entered the day with nine total RBI for the season.

Jordan Washam collected three more hits and for the day combined to go 7-of-11 at the plate.

Five different Louisiana Tech pitchers saw action on the day, but control was an issue for the Bulldogs. As a staff, LA Tech issued six walks, hit four batters and had five wild pitches.

Arkansas State took advantage of Louisiana Tech’s mistakes with a three-spot in the bottom of the third to tie things up, after the Bulldogs scored three in the top of the first.

As the two-teams went back and forth, Arkansas State held a narrow 6-5 lead going into the ninth.

The Bulldogs were able to get the tying run to third base with less than two outs, but Louisiana Tech couldn’t manufacture the final crucial run to send it into extras.

The two teams are scheduled to play the rubber match on Saturday at 6 p.m. but game officials will continue to monitor the situation as snow and freezing temperatures are expected in Jonesboro through the night and into tomorrow.
