Diamond ‘Dogs Split Double-Header at Charlotte

Final Stats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Louisiana Tech snapped a five-game losing streak with an offensive barrage, taking down Charlotte 12-7 in game one of the double-header.

Marshall Boggs blasted his second grand slam of the season in the win, becoming the first Bulldog since Devon Dageford in 2009 to hit two grand slams in a single season. The four-bagger was the big blow to bust things open for Louisiana Tech in the top of the sixth inning.

Things did not get off to a great start of the ‘Dogs, who fell down 4-0 after three innings, but rather than fold the tent, Louisiana Tech kept battling and put up a four-spot in the fourth inning to knot the game up.

Louisiana Tech to their first lead of the series on consecutive doubles by Raphael Gladu and Dalton Skelton which combined to drive in three runs in the top of the fifth.

Charlotte got two runs back in the fifth to make it 7-6, but Boggs’ slam put the game just about out of reach for the 49ers.

Nate Harris came on to pitch the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out four over that stretch.

Boggs led Louisiana Tech with four hits on the day, while also scoring three runs. Jonathan Washam, Gladu and Skelton all picked up two hits in the win and drove home two runs. Sean Ullrich and Chase Lunceford each picked up a pair of hits as well, with Ullrich pushing across one run.

Eight-of-nine hitters in the Louisiana Tech lineup scored at least one run, with Cody Daigle, Lunceford and Boggs each scoring multiple runs.

Graham Ahlrich picked up his second win of the season. Ahlrich tossed 2.1 innings in relief and gave up a lone unearned run with three strikeouts.

Harris picked up his Conference USA-leading seventh save of the year.

In the win, all nine players in the Louisiana Tech lineup registered at least one hit. That is the second time this season the Bulldogs have accomplished that.

In the second game of the double-header, Louisiana Tech outhit Charlotte 10-6, but ultimately fell 4-2 to the 49ers.

The breaks unfortunately did not go the Bulldogs way as an athletic Charlotte outfield made some key plays to limit the Bulldogs offensive production.

LA Tech got on the board first on an RBI-single from Ullrich that scored Boggs, but Charlotte responded with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to knot things up.

In the top of the fourth inning, Boggs opened the inning with a single to right center and Raphael Gladu stepped in and blasted a deep drive to right field. Charlotte right field T.J. Nichting went up and over the wall to pull back a two-run home run from Gladu.

Charlotte put up a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs got one run back in the seventh on an RBI-single from Jonathan Washam.

In the top of the eighth, Cody Daigle drew a two-out walk and Sean Ullrich hit a hard liner to left field. Ullrich’s laser-shot hit the top of the wall and the hard ricochet allowed the 49ers to gun him down at second.

That liner, which missed being a home run by a mere six inches, would have tied the game at 4-4.

Louisiana Tech had one final chance in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but ultimately couldn’t close the gap.

LA Tech hosts UL-Monroe on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at J.C. Love Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 97.7 and streamed on CUSA.TV.
