RUSTON, La. - UT Arlington scored multiple runs in each of the first, third and sixth innings to beat Louisiana Tech, 11-0, in seven innings to complete the series sweep Sunday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
UT Arlington (15-12, 5-1 WAC) led 3-0 after the first inning and added four runs in both the third and sixth innings to give the Mavericks an 11-0 lead, while the Bulldogs were held scoreless for seven innings to give the visitors the series victory.
"It was ugly early and uglier later just like the weather I guess," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "They beat us and pitched better than us, played better defense and hit better than we did. We have to get better. We are not giving our pitchers a chance because we are not scoring runs."
Richie Navari started for Tech (11-19, 1-5 WAC) and was charged with the loss after allowing six runs - five earned - off four hits while walking three UT Arlington batters. Jamie Gilley came on in relief of Navari (1-5) and pitched 3.1 innings. Ben Carlisle, Adam Derouen, James Ferguson and Laetten Galbraith also saw action on the mound for Tech in the loss.
Zach Thompson (3-2) pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout for UT Arlington and gave up just two hits and striking out four on the day. Thompson did not allow a walk in seven innings pitched.
Ryan Walker and Matt Shortall each put together 2-for-4 performances at the plate for the Mavericks with two and three RBI respectively. Shortall added a two-run home run in the first inning.
Simoneaux will join legendary Bulldog broadcaster Dave Nitz for the one-hour Iberia Bank Inside Tech Baseball radio show which debuts at 6 p.m. tomorrow on ESPN 97.7 FM. Fans will have the opportunity to call in and ask Simoneaux questions on the radio show by calling 888-993-7762.
