HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored five runs in the first inning, which led the Golden Eagles to a series sweep of Louisiana Tech with an 8-3 win over the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Pete Taylor Park.
A five-run first inning gave Southern Miss (24-17, 13-5 C-USA) an early advantage in the final game of the weekend, while the Bulldogs scored three runs late in the game, but the deficit was too much to overcome for LA Tech (10-27, 4-17 C-USA).
Cody Carroll (3-0) started for Southern Miss and earned the win after holding the Bulldogs to three hits in six innings on the mound. Carroll walked three and struck out six before the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen. Jake Winston gave up two runs on a home run in the seventh, while Luke Lowery also gave up one run in the eighth. Sean Buchholz closed things out in the ninth for Southern Miss.
Freshman right-hander Braden Bristo (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs - four earned - on four hits in the first inning. Bristo faced seven batters before Adam Derouen came on in relief with one out in the first. Adam Derouen pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out three. Mark Baughman and Laetten Galbraith each pitched 0.2 innings to close out the game for the Bulldogs.
After Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first on a fielding error by Thomas Simoneaux, the Golden Eagles continued to pile on runs with a three-run home run by first baseman Bradley Roney to make it a 4-0 advantage for USM. Roussel complete the scoring for the home team with an RBI single to score Dylan Burdeaux and give Southern Miss a 5-0 lead over Louisiana Tech after one inning of play.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the second on an RBI single by designated hitter Matt Durst for a six-run lead, but Adam Derouen shut down USM offensively for the next four innings.
In the top of the seventh, Tyler Ervine's two-run home run to center field gave the Bulldogs their first two runs of the weekend and cut Southern Miss' lead to four runs, but two additional runs in the bottom half of the seventh preserved the lead for the Golden Eagles with an 8-2 lead.
Taylor was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two infield singles and an RBI after coming on as a defensive substitute in the sixth inning. Ervine was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Ryan Jones, Taylor Burch, Bre'shon Kimbell and Hall each had one hit apiece in the loss.
Roney drove home four runs on the day, including a three-run home run in the first, to help propel the Golden Eagles to a victory. Durst led the team with a 3-for-5 effort and an RBI, while Michael Sterling, Tim Lynch and Burdeaux each had two hits for Southern Miss on the day.
The Bulldogs return home to host Alabama A&M in non-conference action beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 25 at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
