LA Tech Downs WKU in Series Opener, 6-5
April 28, 2017
RUSTON, La. - LA Tech (28-14, 9-10 C-USA) used a pair of three-run frames to come from behind and defeated WKU (13-30, 4-15 C-USA), 6-5, on Friday night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Sean Ullrich was a nightmare for the Hilltoppers who couldn’t keep the centerfielder off of first base. Ullrich reached base four times, picked up three hits, while also scoring a run and registering the game-winning RBI.
For the fourth time in the past six games alone, freshman Kyle Griffen picked up the victory. The lefty tossed five innings in relief, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs, which allowed the Bulldogs to climb back into the ball game.
WKU held a 3-0 lead after four innings, but the Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The tie was short-lived though as WKU responded with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Chase Lunceford knotted things up again with a two-run double and he later scored the eventual game winning run on and RBI-single from Ullrich.
Graham Ahlrich pitched the final two innings and did not allow a base runner, while also striking out two WKU hitters to earn his first save of the 2017 season.
Jordan Washam and Raphael Gladu each picked up a pair of hits in the win, while Matt Holcombe, Brent Diaz and Gladu each drove in a lone run. Lunceford was the only Louisiana Tech player to drive in multiple runs in the victory.
Louisiana Tech and WKU will now gear up for a double header on Saturday which is slated to begin at 12 p.m. The series finale will follow approximately 45 minutes following the completion of game one. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN 97.7 and streamed on CUSA.TV.
