Bakersfield Blanks Bulldogs 2-0
May 3, 2013
RUSTON, La. - CSU Bakersfield scored the only two runs of the ball game as the Roadrunners shut out Louisiana Tech, 2-0, Friday night in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference series at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
CSU Bakersfield's (30-17, 13-6 WAC) starter Jeff McKenzie pitched a complete game shutout and held Louisiana Tech (15-31, 3-16 WAC) to just three hits on the night. The Bulldogs left four runners on base, while McKenzie only allowed one runner into scoring position over the course of nine innings when Tyler Qualls reached second base on a wild pitch early in the game.
"[Jeff] McKenzie is not 11-1 for nothing," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "We had some good at bats where we fought and hit a couple down the line that were about six inches foul, but we just couldn't get anything going tonight. I thought [James] Ferguson and [Caleb] Dudley pitched extremely well, but when you don't score, it is hard to beat them, but we have to keep on fighting."
McKenzie (11-1) earned the win for the Roadrunners as the left hander pitched his fourth complete game shutout of the 2013 season. McKenzie struck out five Bulldog hitters and walked just one of the 30 batters he faced.
James Ferguson (2-2) started and was charged with the loss for Tech after allowing two runs - one unearned - off five hits, while striking out one and walking two in 4.1 innings of work. Caleb Dudley came on in relief in the fifth inning and gave up no runs off one hit, while striking out a season-high six batters in 4.2 innings.
The Roadrunners got things started off early in the first when Tyler Shryock singled up the middle and later scored on a double to left field by Mylz Jones to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead. CSUB would add an unearned run in the fifth after Oscar Sanay reached on a fielding error and later scored on an RBI single by Shryock to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 victory.
Shryock led CSU Bakersfield with a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI and run scored, while Cael Brockmeyer also notched two hits in four at bats on the night. Jones drove in a run for the Roadrunners and was 1-for-4 at the plate.
The series resumes at 3 p.m. tomorrow as the Bulldogs look to even the series against the Roadrunners at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
