RUSTON, La. - Alex Williams hit his 11th home run of the season in the first inning and Trevor Petersen allowed just one run in seven innings as Louisiana Tech (23-23, 6-9 WAC) defeated San Jose State (21-22, 5-7 WAC), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
The Bulldogs swept its first series of the season and first such series since May 7-9, 2010 (vs. Nevada) and have now won five consecutive conference games.
"Trevor got thru the first inning and that was key. He has pitched well in his last few outings and continued that today." said head coach Wade Simoneaux. "He and Gilley pitched great. Gilley continues to throw his pitch."
Petersen (5-4) picked up his fifth win on the year after allowing just one run in 7.0 innings. The junior right-hander allowed a first inning run before shutting down the Spartans offense thru the next 6.0 innings. Jamie Gilley was credited with his second save on the year after striking out five in 2.0 scoreless innings to complete the three-game sweep on SJSU. Zack Jones (3-3) was charged with his third loss after allowing four runs in 4.0 innings.
Williams had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI in his final home game as a Bulldog. Tyler Qualls tied a career high with three hits and the catcher also walked once to reach base in all four of his plate appearances.
After SJSU scored one run in the first inning, Petersen and Gilley combined to hold the Spartans scoreless thru the final eight innings as San Jose State stranded 10 runners in the loss. Williams hit a line drive home run to right field to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom frame for his 33rd home run of his Tech career.
The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth off of three walks and a fielder's choice to take a 4-1 lead before Petersen and Gilley combined to strike out six hitters in the final four innings.
Tech hits the road to face in-state rival Northwestern State on Wednesday as Josh McDaniel will broadcast the game on LA Tech All-Access.
