Baseball Clinches WAC Tournament Berth with 4-1 Win at Sacramento State
May 20, 2011
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Louisiana Tech recorded a season high seven doubles and Caleb Dudley set a school record with his 10th save of the year as the Bulldogs recorded a 4-1 win at Sacramento State Friday afternoon to clinch a berth in the 2011 WAC Tournament.
Tech (30-24, 10-11 WAC) never trailed and was led by Kyle Roliard's 3-for-5 day with one run scored. His lone RBI of the game came in the seventh inning and gave Tech the lead for good over a pesky Hornets (18-37, 5-16 WAC) team that was eliminated from WAC Tournament contention. The top six teams in the WAC advance to the season-ending tournament in Mesa, Ariz.
Dudley (10) set a new school single season record for saves after striking out two over three complete innings and not allowing a hit while facing eight batters. Jeb Stefan (7-4) got the win after allowing one run on five hits, striking out three and walking four over six innings. Karl Maas (4-5) was charged with the loss for Sacramento State after allowing two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings while striking out four, walking two and throwing three wild pitches.
The Bulldogs recorded 11 hits on the game but left 10 runners on base, nine of which were stranded in scoring position. Sacramento State left seven runners on base.
Louisiana Tech got on the board early as Joe Ford led off the second inning with a double and then advanced to third on a Colby Johnson fly out to right field. Ford scampered across the plate on a slow groundout to third base by Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist Clint Ewing.
The Hornets struck back in the bottom of the sixth as Kirby Young hit a solo home run to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Sac State put two more runners on board in the sixth before Stefan struck out Andrew Ayers to end the threat.
Stefan allowed two runners to reach base with no outs in the seventh before Dudley entered, who faced Derrick Chung to hit a fielder's choice to third base to force a double play. Dudley then forced Will Soto to ground out to second base to end the threat and would proceed to retire the final six batters of the game.
Tech added a run in the eighth as Alex Williams led off the inning with a walk and then moved to third on a two-base throwing error by Hornet pitcher Andrew Galvan. Williams would score on an RBI double by Joey Ford to center field.
The Bulldogs added one more run in the top of the ninth as Roliard led the inning off with a double to right center field. He scored two batters later off of an RBI single up the middle by Mark Threlkeld.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 21 starting at noon PT/2 p.m. CT. Bulldog fans can listen to the action called by Dave Nitz on ESPN 97.7 FM in Ruston.
