Feb. 5, 2013

RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech baseball team was picked to finish seventh out of ten teams in the Western Athletic Conference released by the league office Tuesday.

Twenty-three upperclassmen highlight this year's squad, which is the most by any LA Tech team in head coach Wade Simoneaux's 11-year tenure with the Bulldogs. Tech returns eight starting position players and two starting pitchers, including two top relievers returning to the mound in 2013.

The 'Dogs are coming off a season that saw them go 27-28 and 7-11 in conference play, including the best showing in a WAC tournament in the program's history.

The Bulldogs are entering their 12th and final year as members of the WAC, and in its final season, LA Tech will battle new faces as six of the ten total teams are new to the conference schedule. Tech will compete against a revamped WAC schedule as Dallas Baptist, CSU Bakersfield, Seattle, Texas State, UT Arlington and UTSA are all new additions to this year's league.

Dallas Baptist was selected as the favorite to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title by the league's 10 head coaches. The Patriots received 80 points and eight first place votes after a 41-19 season last year as an independent. DBU advanced to its second-straight NCAA Tournament last season. DBU joins the WAC this season after playing as a Division I independent the past nine seasons.

Texas State, a newcomer to the league in 2013, was picked to finish second with 65 points and one first place vote followed by New Mexico State (60), Sacramento State (54), CSU Bakersfield (47), UT Arlington (45), Louisiana Tech (41), UTSA (24), San Jose State (23) and Seattle (11).

The Bulldogs open the season at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 against UT Arlington on the road. Tech will open at home Feb. 22-24 against Oral Roberts.

Season tickets for the upcoming season are available now and can be purchased by calling the Tech Ticket Office at 318-257-3631, emailing techtickets@latech.edu or logging on to www.LATechSports.com.
