RUSTON - With opening day just around the corner, the preseason accolades continue to roll in for a pair of Bulldogs. Early Monday morning, senior Clint Ewing and junior Mark Threlkeld were named to the preseason all-WAC squad by Perfect Game USA in their annual conference preview. The honor marks the second such preseason award for each student-athlete this season.
Fresno State led the way with six all-conference selections while Hawai'i ranked second with three honorees.
Ewing, one of five seniors on the 2011 roster, was tabbed as the teams' catcher while Threlkeld was named as the designated hitter.
Nearly mirroring the WAC preseason coaches' poll, the Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth while Fresno State was chosen as the early favorite to win the conference. The last time the Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth was in 2009 when LA Tech surpassed expectations and finished second in the league with a 13-11 record against conference foes.
Continuing with their conference preview of draft eligible prospects, Perfect Game USA named Threlkeld the fourth-best prospect in the 2011 draft class while southpaw Mike Jefferson was named the seventh-best prospect. Looking ahead one season, the scouting bureau labeled Tech's projected opening day starter, RHP Trevor Petersen, as the conferences' third-best prospect for the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Tech opens the 2011 season this Friday at 6 p.m. as the Bulldogs host Southern Illinois as part of the Louisiana Tech Baseball Classic. For information on season tickets, visit www.LATechSports.com
