Late Inning Magic Lifts Bulldogs over Mavericks in Extras, 3-1

Feb. 24, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas - Jordan Washam tied it in the eighth and Marshall Boggs won it in the tenth, as Louisiana Tech moved to 5-0 on the season with a dramatic 3-1 win over UT-Arlington on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.

"It was not pretty, but I just told the club that Division I baseball wins are hard to come by," Head coach Lane Burroughs said. "We'll take this one. It was cold tonight and this was the first time we have played in cold weather. It was our first extra inning game too. I am proud of our guys for grinding this one out and finding a way to win."

Kent Hasler got the start and was lights out on the mound, going seven innings, striking out seven and not walking a batter.

After struggling to get anything going in the first three innings, LA Tech had their first threat in the top of the fourth inning, on a pair of singles from Jordan Washam and Sean Ullrich to open the frame. Unfortunately, with runners on the corners and nobody out a pop out and consecutive punch outs quickly put an end to the scoring threat.

UT-Arlington followed with a threat of their own thanks to a leadoff single from Omar Salinas and a one-out single from Brady Cox. Hasler induced a lazy fly ball to center and a fielders' choice to get out of the fourth unscathed.

While Louisiana Tech struggled to get into an offensive rhythm, Hasler continued to keep the Bulldogs in the ball game.

"Boy we were really struggling offensively and Kent Hasler just kept dealing.," Burroughs continued. "He was lights out. He is beginning to look like what a real Friday night guy is supposed to look like. He had seven punch outs, no walks and just one run in seven innings pitched. He deserves a better fate, he should have gotten the win. I thought Coach Oz called a great game."

An inning later, the Mavericks got the two-out hit they were looking for. Noah Vaughan reached third with two outs in the inning and Phil Berthiaume singled to the third base bringing home Vaughan.

After Chase Lunceford led off the seventh inning with a single down the right field line and the Bulldogs couldn't get him home, they got another chance when Jonathan Washam opened the eighth with a bloop single to left.

Parker Bates laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second and a ground out moved, the pinch-runner, Mason Robinson to third. Jordan Washam made his brothers hit count, lifting a single to left field to scoring Robinson and tie the game at 1-1.

UT-Arlington put together a serious threat in the bottom of the ninth, after consecutive one-out singles put the winning run at second. A 6-4-3 double play induced by Matt Miller sent the game into extra inning.

With new life, Louisiana Tech took advantage. Cody Daigle was hit by pitch to open the inning. Representing the go-ahead run, Raphael Gladu intended on moving him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. However, the Mavs walked Gladu on four straight pitches and the Bulldogs had two on with nobody out.

After two quick outs, Louisiana Tech needed someone to come through with two outs and it was Boggs who answered the call. The senior found green grass in between three Mavs' outfielders and the two-out single brought both Daigle and Gladu home.

In the bottom of the tenth, UT-Arlington threatened with a couple of two-out baserunners, but Miller slammed the door shut to give the Bulldogs their fifth consecutive win of the season. Miller picked up his first career win with the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and the Mavericks will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 97.7 and fans can follow @LATechBSB on Twitter for in-game updates.
