Feb. 26, 2013
RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are set to hit the road once again for a midweek matchup against the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Tech (2-5) is coming off series loss to Oral Roberts at home, dropping games two and three of the series after winning the first game of the weekend last Friday night. The Bulldogs will face a hungry Lumberjack team that is looking for their first win of the season after dropping to 0-4 on the year.
The 'Dogs hold a 17-5 advantage over Stephen F. Austin and have won 10 straight contests against the Lumberjacks dating back to 1992, including a 9-5 victory for Tech in 2012 at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in the two teams' latest meeting.
Junior right hander Omar Ugarte (1-0) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Bulldogs in what will mark his first start in a Tech uniform. Ugarte earned his first win of the season against UALR Feb. 19 after coming on in relief to pitch two innings of one-hit baseball and striking out four batters. For the season, Ugarte has a 3.86 earned run average after appearing in four games, allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters in 2013.
Stephen F. Austin is coming off a 9-2 midweek loss to No. 24 Texas A&M and lost its first three games of the season to South Alabama on the road. The contests Wednesday will also mark the home opener for Stephen F. Austin at Jaycees Field.
The Lumberjacks will send right hander Kevin Bishop (0-0) to the bump to face the Bulldogs in the midweek contest. Bishop has made one appearance for Stephen F. Austin in 2013 and has recorded a 6.75 ERA with one start under his belt. In four innings pitched, Bishop has allowed three runs - all earned - off five hits and walked four. Opposing batters are hitting .294 against Bishop this season.
Junior shortstop Ryan Gebhardt led Tech at the plate over the weekend with six hits in 11 at bats to tie first baseman Tyler Ervine for the team-lead in batting average with .385. Ervine and Gebhardt lead the team in hits with 10 each in seven games played.
The Bulldogs will travel to Lake Charles, La. following Wednesday's game to face McNeese State in a three-game series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cowboy Diamond.
