RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech pitcher Phil Maton has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league Monday, after posting a 2-0 record in two appearances this past week, including a complete game performance to beat Florida Atlantic in league play.
In the span of one week, Maton picked up two big wins for the Bulldogs after allowing just one earned run off four hits in a total of 10.0 innings, while striking out nine.
In league play, Maton pitched a complete game and struck out a season-high seven batters to lead Louisiana Tech to a 3-2 league win over Florida Atlantic. That win tied the series at one game apiece this past Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. Maton earned the win for LA Tech after pitching the fourth complete game of his career and his first of the season.
The Chatham, Ill., native held FAU hitless until the fourth inning and held Florida Atlantic to a total of just two hits until the ninth when the Owls ended Maton's shutout by scoring two runs on two base hits in the final inning. The junior right-hander was lights out for the Bulldogs in his best outing of the season as he allowed just one FAU runner past second base up until the ninth inning.
The win over FAU marked the second win of the week for Maton as he earned the victory for Tech last Wednesday when the Bulldogs defeated Grambling State, 8-1, in Ruston. In that game, he pitched a perfect inning in relief, adding two strikeouts to help lead Tech to its 19th straight win over Grambling.
This marks the first weekly honor any Bulldog player has earned at this point in the season and the second weekly pitching honor for Maton, now in his third year at Tech.
Louisiana Tech returns to the diamond this Friday, March 21 to play hosts to Conference USA opponent Old Dominion in a three-game series at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
