Diamond ‘Dogs Travel to Stephen F. Austin for Midweek Contest
March 20, 2017
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech (15-5) looks regroup and move forward as the Diamond ‘Dogs return their focus towards a midweek battle with Stephen F. Austin (8-13) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The ‘Dogs who started last week with wins over Grambling and nationally-ranked Lafayette, dropped three close games to Southern Miss over the weekend to start Conference USA play.
Stephen F. Austin will enter the game looking to snap a three-game losing streak themselves as the ‘Jacks dropped a three-game set to McNeese State in Southland Conference action over the weekend.
Louisiana Tech and SFA do share some similar opponents on the schedule as the ‘Jacks split a pair of games with UT-Arlington, defeated Grambling in a midweek contest and took two-of-three from Little Rock in a weekend series.
Earlier in the season, the ‘Jacks nearly took down a nationally-ranked Texas A&M squad in College Station, but ultimately fell in extra innings 6-5.
Getting the start for Stephen F. Austin will be left-hander Erik Nouis. On the season Nouis has made four starts and owns an ERA of 7.80 through 15 innings. Those numbers are inflated after a bad outing at UTSA earlier in the season. Nouis has 12 strikeouts through those 15 innings.
Nouis will be countered by Louisiana Tech right-hander Cameron Linck. Linck enters with a 2-0 record and owns an ERA of 2.71 through 21 innings. Opponents are hitting a mere .203 against the senior who also has 15 strikeouts.
At the plate, Jordan Washam continues to wreak havoc atop the Louisiana Tech order with his .410 batting average. Washam leads Conference USA in both on-base percentage at .510 and runs scored with 32. Those 32 runs also are tied with one other player for the most in college baseball.
Brent Diaz, who is currently batting.385, has collected a team-high 15 extra-base hits this season for Louisiana Tech. Diaz and Chase Lunceford are tied for the team lead in RBI with 23 runs driven in. Marshall Boggs has also driven in 22 runs.
As an offensive unit, Louisiana Tech just finds ways to get on base. One of those ways is via hit-by-pitch. Outside of Louisiana Tech, no player in Conference USA has been hit more than six times this season. Meanwhile, three Louisiana Tech players have been hit seven or more times this year, led by Brent Diaz who has been plunked nine times.
The ‘Jacks currently have two hitters that are batting above a .370 clip in Josh Evans and Andrew Cole. Evans leads the team with a .379 average and also has two home runs on the season. Cole currently holds a .375 average.
Zac Michener has been the big run producer for SFA. Michener has driven a team-leading 13 runs and also has two round-trippers to this point in the year.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 97.7 FM and Stephen F. Austin will be providing a free video stream of the game through Facebook Live.
