Senior catcher Tyler Qualls

March 21, 2014

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech senior catcher Tyler Qualls has been added to the 2014 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Thursday.

The Johnny Bench Award is an accolade given annually to the top catcher in collegiate baseball and Qualls is one of 74 nominees in the country. He is also one of seven Conference USA catchers on the 2014 watch list.

In just 19 games into the season, Qualls has already thrown out seven base runners attempting to steal, which ranks fourth among all C-USA catchers. Qualls threw out a total of nine base runners all of last season. He has also picked off two runners in the 16 games he has started for the Bulldogs. The senior catcher has yet to allow a passed ball this season.

At the plate, Qualls is batting .241 with six walks, giving him a .313 on base percentage in his final season at Louisiana Tech. He has also successfully stolen two bases this season in as many attempts.

In four years with the Bulldogs, Qualls has thrown out a total of 27 runners attempting to steal with seven pickoffs.
