RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech will make the short trip down I-20 to face off with Grambling State on the diamond for the second time this season with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park in Grambling.
The Bulldogs come into tomorrow's game with an overall record of 8-14 and a 3-6 mark in Conference USA action. Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-17 on the season and are currently on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Southern at home last weekend.
Most recently, LA Tech dropped the series against Old Dominion at home with a loss on Friday night before splitting the doubleheader on Saturday. Tech has only played six road games this season and come into Tuesday night's game with a 2-4 record in away contests.
Tomorrow's game marks the second time this season the Bulldogs have taken on the Tigers with the last meeting coming on March 12 in a game LA Tech won, 8-1, at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston. The Bulldogs have won 19 consecutive games over Grambling heading into Tuesday's midweek matchup.
Louisiana Tech and Grambling State have met on the diamond 24 times coming into Tuesday's game, with the Bulldogs currently on an 19-game winning streak against the Tigers. LA Tech currently leads the all-time series over the LA Tech, having posted a 21-3 record in the series history. In 12 seasons, head coach Wade Simoneaux has posted an impressive 19-1 record over the Grambling Tigers. Earlier this season, LA Tech took advantage of a five-run seventh inning to cruise to an 8-1 victory over Grambling on March 12 at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
At the plate
Taylor Love continues to lead the Bulldogs at the dish with a .321 batting average this season. Love leads the team in hits (26) and runs (14), and recently had one of his best games as a Bulldog after going 3-for-4 with his first career home run March 12 against Grambling State. The sophomore shortstop has also reached base safely in 20 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 15 against Southeastern Louisiana. Both Tyler Ervine and Bre'shon Kimbell are tied for the team lead with three home runs apiece, while Stephen Gandy continues his hot streak at the plate with a .311 average in 15 games. As a team, LA Tech is hitting .246 this season with 27 doubles, a triple and 11 home runs.
Grambling comes into the series with a .263 team batting average with 27 doubles, eight triples and seven home runs. The Tigers are led by senior outfielder Korey Hall, who comes into tomorrow's game with a .349 average with three doubles, a triple and nine RBI.
On the mound
Louisiana Tech will go with junior right-hander Austin Greer, who will get his third start of the season. Greer has appeared in five games for Tech and comes into Tuesday's game with a 3.38 earned run average. He has eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings pitched in 2014.
Grambling's pitching staff comes into the contest with a 6.86 ERA in 23 games, while allowing 39 doubles, 10 triples and 16 home runs on the season. Opponents are hitting .336 against the Tigers' pitchers in 2014.
The Bulldogs will leave Thursday and travel to San Antonio, Texas to battle former WAC and current C-USA foe UTSA (16-8, 3-3 C-USA) in a three-game league series at Roadrunner Field. The series begins at 6 p.m. Friday night, while Games 2 & 3 will be played at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
The game versus the Tigers begins at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park in Grambling.
